William Mendenhall

William Mendenhall

Dr. William Mendenhall (late) was the founding chairman of the statistics department at the University of Florida (UF) and served the department from 1963 until 1977. He got his Ph.D. in statistics from North Carolina State University and was a professor of mathematics at Bucknell University before teaching at UF. Best known as a prolific textbook author in statistics, his textbook Introduction to Probability and Statistics has been used throughout the United States and the rest of the world as a canonical introduction to the subject. Dr. Mendenhall retired as professor emeritus in 1978 and continued his textbook writing until he died in 2009.

Statistics for Engineering and the Sciences, 6th Edition, (PDF) is designed for a two-semester introductory course on statistics for college students majoring in engineering or physical sciences. This widespread textbook continues to show college students the primary ideas of knowledge description and statistical inference and the statistical strategies vital for actual-world functions. Students will perceive methods to gather and analyze knowledge and suppose critically about the outcomes. New to the Sixth Edition:

  • Introduction of the case research at the starting of every chapter
  • Many new and up to date workouts primarily based on up to date engineering and scientific-associated research and precise knowledge
  • New part on utilizing regression residuals to test the assumptions required in a easy linear regression evaluation
  • More statistical software program printouts and corresponding directions for use that mirror the newest variations of the SAS, SPSS, and MINITAB software program
  • Streamlined materials on all primary sampling ideas, equivalent to random sampling and pattern survey designs, which provides college students an earlier introduction to key sampling points
  • New examples on evaluating matched pairs versus unbiased samples, choosing the pattern dimension for a designed experiment, and analyzing a two-issue experiment with quantitative elements

The first a number of chapters of the ebook establish the targets of statistics, clarify methods to describe knowledge, and current the primary ideas of likelihood. The textual content then introduces the two strategies for making inferences about inhabitants parameters: estimation with confidence intervals and speculation testing. The remaining chapters prolong these ideas to cowl different subjects useful in analyzing engineering and scientific knowledge, together with categorical knowledge evaluation, regression evaluation, mannequin constructing, evaluation of variance for designed experiments, nonparametric statistics, statistical high quality management, and product and system reliability.
