About The Author

Hugh Coolican

Hugh Coolican

Hugh Coolican is the ‘guru’ of A-level and undergraduate Research Methods, as the author of the classic book Research Methods and Statistics in Psychology, which is in its 7th edition. He is in ‘phased retirement’ but cannot quite let go so works two days a week in Coventry, teaching Philosophical Psychology and Research Methods. Hugh is also an Assistant Examiner for the International Baccalaureate.

The PDF of the 8th edition of “Research Methods and Statistics in Psychology” provides an extensive and readily understandable guide to the research methods and statistical concepts utilized in psychology today. This acclaimed book by Coolican is expertly crafted to cater to students at all levels, offering clear guidance through every stage of their research projects. Covering both quantitative and qualitative approaches, the textbook delves into planning and conducting studies, analyzing data, and writing reports. It also prioritizes diversity, with a significant section dedicated to cross-cultural psychology methods and issues. In keeping with its stellar reputation, the book seamlessly integrates qualitative elements into its methods chapters and dedicates two separate chapters to qualitative methods. It delivers comprehensive coverage of experimental, interviewing, and observational methods, alongside psychological testing and a wide array of statistical procedures, including nominal-level tests, various ANOVA designs, correlation, regression, and an addition to this edition, logistic regression.

The PDF ebook is an invaluable resource that offers extensive and visually engaging SPSS instructions for a variety of procedures, thus obviating the necessity for an additional SPSS textbook. The new 8th Edition introduces crucial features such as logistic regression, expanded coverage of report writing guidelines, and concepts elucidated with contemporary research examples. In addition, every chapter incorporates a glossary, key terms, and integrated exercises. Furthermore, the book is complemented by an updated Instructor and Student Resource website, which provides interactive multiple-choice questions, practical exercises, supplementary reading materials, and test banks tailored for each chapter.
