Spencer A. Rathus

Dr. Spencer Rathus got his Ph.D. in psychology and then entered clinical practice and teaching. He has published many research articles in journals such as Behaviour Research and Therapy, Behavior Therapy, Journal of Clinical Psychology, Journal of Behavior Therapy and Experimental Psychiatry, Adolescence, and Criminology.

Dr. Spencer's research interests lie in the areas of human growth and development, methods of therapy, psychological disorders, and psychological assessment. Numerous personal experiences enter into Spencer Rathus's textbooks. He was the first member of his family to go to college and found textbooks to be very cold and intimidating. When his opportunity arrived to write textbooks for college students, Spencer wanted them to be different--warm and encouraging, especially to students who were also the first generation in their families to be entering college.

Rathus is proud of his family. His wife, Lois Fichner-Rathus, is also a successful textbook author and a professor of art history.

In the book Psychology and the Challenges of Life: Adjustment and Growth, 14th Edition (PDF), authors Spencer Rathus and Jeffrey Nevid delve into the various ways in which psychology is relevant to the everyday experiences we encounter. They emphasize the vital role psychology plays in helping us navigate the numerous obstacles we face on a daily basis. Throughout the textbook, the authors illustrate how psychological concepts and principles can be applied to address challenges such as time management, self-identity development, building and maintaining relationships, adopting healthier lifestyles, coping with stress, and dealing with emotional problems and psychological disorders.

The latest edition, the Fourteenth Edition, has been extensively updated to cater to the needs and concerns of a new generation of students. It offers additional information on psychology in the digital age, the influence of social media, the ongoing Opioid crisis, and provides expanded coverage of topics related to sexuality, gender, and sexual orientation.
