About The Author

Randall D. Knight

Randall D. Knight

Dr. Randall Knight or Randy, taught introductory physics for 32 years at California Polytechnic University and Ohio State University. He is Professor Emeritus of Physics at Cal Polytechnic Univ. Professor Knight received a Ph.D. in physics from the University of California, Berkeley and was a post-doctoral fellow at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics before joining the faculty at Ohio State University. It was at Ohio State that he began to learn about the research in physics education that, many years later, led to 5 Easy Lessons: Strategies for Successful Physics Teaching and this ebook, as well as College Physics: A Strategic Approach, co-authored with Stuart Field and Brian Jones. Randy’s research interests are in the field of environmental science and laser spectroscopy. When Dr. Knight is not in front of a computer, you can find him hiking, playing the piano, sea kayaking, or spending time with his wife Sally and six cats.

A research-driven approach to learning physics

Knight’s Physics for Scientists and Engineers, 5th Global Edition (PDF) incorporates Physics Education Research and cognitive science best practices to help students develop their conceptual understanding, problem-solving skills, and visualization abilities. The author emphasizes qualitative reasoning based on physics principles before introducing mathematical formalization, guiding students in problem-solving through a systematic and step-by-step approach. The textbook offers a practical introduction to physics, connecting it to real-life scenarios and exploring advanced topics, models, and modeling.

In the Global 5th Edition, you will find new and expanded media and assessments available in Mastering and the Pearson eText. These resources are designed to create a fully integrated learning experience, suitable for both active and traditional classrooms. The updated content covers essential topics like Viscosity and Poiseuille’s Equation, as well as quantitative discussions on Entropy and detailed explanations of Carnot Efficiency.
