About The Author

Dee McGonigle

Dee McGonigle

Dr. Dee McGonigle has more than 40 years of experience working in the fields of nursing and nursing informatics. She is both a Certified Nurse Educator and a Certified Distance Education Instructor. In 1991, Dr. McGonigle defined informatics after learning how computers could improve nursing education while pursuing a master's degree.
She co-founded the Online Journal of Nursing Informatics (OJNI), a scholarly, professional journal, in 1996. From 1996 to 2013, she served as the journal's Editor in Chief.

The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society currently publishes OJNI (HIMSS). Dr. McGonigle became the first person to receive the Platinum Award from the Online Journal of Nursing Informatics in 2014. She created the ETHICAL Model and the Foundation of Knowledge Model.

Kathleen Mastrian

Dr. Kathleen Mastrian is a program coordinator and associate professor of nursing at Penn State's Shenango campus. She holds a doctorate in sociology with a focus on medical sociology, as well as a master's and a bachelor's degree in nursing from Penn State and Pitt, respectively.

She has spent 36 years working with non-traditional-age students in the RN to BS nursing program. She developed five of the courses for the RN to BS program at Penn State's World Campus, was one of the original proponents of its online implementation, and currently teaches at least one section of the program each semester. She has a lot of experience instructing sociology, research, and informatics.
