Jens David Ohlin

Dr. Jens David Ohlin is a law professor at Cornell University Law School. He focuses on international and domestic criminal law, as well as comparative and international criminal law.

Professor Ohlin's research also focuses on war laws, particularly the impact of new technologies on warfare legislation, such as remotely piloted drones and targeted killing strategies, cyber-warfare, and the role of non-state actors in armed conflicts. Targeted Killings: Law and Morality in an Asymmetrical World (co-authored with A. Altman and C. Finkelstein), Cyber-War: Law and Ethics for Virtual Conflicts (co-authored with C. Finkelstein and K. Govern), and Defending Humanity: When Force is Justified and Why (co-authored with C. Finkelstein and K. Govern) are some of his notable works.

Foreign interference in elections is a critical and longstanding concern, but with the advent of information and communication technologies, it has become a more pressing problem. The unprecedented ability to use malwares, disinformation, misinformation, algorithms, closed social media platforms, and Twitter bots to influence and manipulate elections has made it more challenging to protect democracy. The infamous Russian interference in the 2016 US Presidential Election was just one example of how severe and real the threat is. To address this concern more holistically, Defending Democracies: Combating Foreign Election Interference in a Digital Age (PDF) takes an interdisciplinary approach to provide actionable solutions to combat foreign election interference. The book has three main areas of focus; the first is defining the issue of election interference by foreign countries and their proxies. Second, the book highlights the solutions that international law might bring to the table, and third, it explores alternative regulatory frameworks that can prevent foreign election interference. The thought-provoking insights shared in this book help to create a much-needed conversation that crosses conventional disciplinary boundaries and proposes innovative solutions. The authors have highlighted several alternative solutions, both domestic and international, to successfully combat foreign election interference. The book also provides a comprehensive overview of electoral law from a domestic and international perspective, allowing readers to understand the legal framework explicitly designed to address these issues.
