The book is organized into two parts. Part I starts with a chapter outlining nine traits of an effective counselor, and goes on to cover foundational, essential, and commonly used skills. It delves into areas such as nonverbal communication, establishing an equal partnership, showing respect for clients, active listening, empathy, and offering alternatives. It also includes a chapter on gathering information and using solution-focused questioning. Part I concludes with a chapter on specialized skills like advocacy, lethality assessment, cognitive-behavioral responses, and crisis, trauma, and disaster counseling.

Part II delves into treatment issues, featuring chapters dedicated to case conceptualization, case management (including DSM-5, psychotropic medications, writing case notes, and more), cultural competency, and ethical, professional, and legal considerations. The book is comprehensive and offers valuable insights, making it suitable for graduate-level counseling and related programs as well as individuals entering the helping professions.
