The study of natural and managed ecosystems under various conditions of species interactions and global change is the focus of Dr. Hacker's research.

Her most recent research has concentrated on the protective function of coastal ecosystems in reducing vulnerability to climate change. She is the author or coauthor of numerous articles and book chapters examining topics in coastal community ecology and ecosystem functions and services, in addition to the textbooks Ecology and Life: The Science of Biology.

William D. Bowman

The fourth edition of the Ecology eBook maintains its focus on providing a well-organized and easy-to-read textbook for instructors and students to explore the basics of ecology. This edition also emphasizes the development of students’ quantitative and problem-solving skills. The new Hone Your Problem-Solving Skills series has been added to the set of review questions at the end of each chapter. The additional Analyzing Data exercises have been included in the Companion Website, which helps students enhance their skills sets, such as performing calculations, designing experiments, making graphs, and interpreting results.

Recognizing the increasing effects of climate change on ecological systems, the authors have included additional Climate Change Connections. These vignettes help ecology students appreciate and understand the many consequences of global climate change on the distributions and functions of organisms as well as the ecosystems they depend on. Additionally, the authors have revised and strengthened key pedagogical features of the Ecology 4e textbook.

For students, the Ecology Companion Website offers a wealth of study and review material, including chapter outlines and summaries, and hands-on problem-solving exercises that provide practical experience working with experimental data and interpreting results from simulations and models. The Climate Change Connections explore the links between ecological concepts and climate change. Also, Web Extensions expand on the coverage of selected topics presented in the textbook. Students can also check their comprehension of the material covered in each chapter through online quizzes, which require instructor registration.

For instructors, the Ecology Instructor’s Resource Library contains a variety of resources, including figures and tables, PowerPoint resources, hands-on problem-solving exercises, and answers to the analyzing data exercises. Also, the Ecology, Fourth Edition, Test Bank includes a thorough set of questions for each chapter, and additional quantitative questions have been added for the fourth edition. The Companion Website includes an online quiz for each chapter of the textbook, which can be assigned or opened for student self-quizzes, and quiz results are stored in an online gradebook and can be exported.

Note: This only includes the Ecology 4e PDF eBook. No TB, online access codes, IM, etc., are included.
