About The Author

James M. Henslin

James M. Henslin

Dr. James M. Henslin, who was born in Minnesota, graduated from high school and junior college in California and from college in Indiana. Awarded scholarships, he earned his Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in sociology at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. After this, James was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship from the National Institute of Mental Health, and spent a year studying how people adjust to the suicide of a family member. His primary interests in sociology are the sociology of everyday life, international relations and deviance. Dr. Henslin has also published widely in sociology journals, including American Journal of Sociology and Social Problems.

After completing his doctorate, James joined the faculty at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville, where he is Professor Emeritus of Sociology. James enjoys fishing and reading. He especially enjoys visiting and living in other cultures, for this brings him face to face with behaviors and ways of thinking that he cannot take for granted, experiences that “make sociological principles come alive.”

The eBook titled “Sociology: A Down-To-Earth Approach Core Concepts (6th edition)” is adapted from the best-selling comprehensive textbook by Henslin. It offers detailed coverage of 10 high-priority topics, which are the foundation of many introductory sociology courses. The PDF etextbook is unique as it provides an economical and concise format without compromising the depth of coverage. The 10 chapters that constitute Core Concepts offer full coverage, unlike a “brief” or “essentials” textbook that would have edited them down from a longer ebook. This feature makes it perfect for one-semester or one-term introductory sociology courses that instructors emphasize. The author’s familiar “down-to-earth” approach and personal writing style highlight the sociology of everyday life. The book contains personal reflection, wit, and real illuminating examples, which sets it apart from other introductory textbooks. Moreover, it features distinctive elements like the globalization of capitalism, comparative perspectives, and visual presentations of sociology.

MySocLab is sold separately and is an integral part of the Henslin learning program. It comprises engaging activities and assessments that provide a teaching and learning system, which helps sociology students view the world through a sociological lens. Using MySocLab, college students can develop critical thinking skills through writing, explore real-world data through the new Social Explorer, and watch the latest entries in the Core Concept Video Series.

In addition to the textbook, other resources such as the test bank, instructor manual, and more are available for sale.
