Johnson received his Ph.D. from Harvard University and is the Director of the Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Genetics, and Developmental Biology Graduate Program at the University of California, San Francisco, along with being a Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at the same college.

Dr. Bruce Michael Alberts is a scientist at the University of California, San Francisco, and holds the Chancellor's Leadership Chair in Biochemistry and Biophysics for Science and Education.
He has made significant contributions to our understanding of the protein complexes that allow for chromosomal replication when living cells divide. The 2014 Shaw Prize in Life Science and Medicine, the 2014 Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research, the 2015 Vilcek Prize in Biomedical Science, the 2018 Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences, and the 2020 UCSF Lifetime Achievement in Mentoring Award are just a few of his recent honours.
